November is always a very special month for me, but his year especially. Yesterday I celebrated my 30th birthday; on Friday the first episode of my very own TV show aired and 2 weeks ago, it was Richard and my 4th wedding anniversary. So lots of things to celebrate this month!

Each year, for our anniversary, we like to travel somewhere, just the two of us. This time around, we decided to go and explore Abu Dhabi, since neither of us had ever been to the Middle East before. Plus it's still super warm and sunny there and we can never say no to that😜 Since November is a suuuuper busy month for me and Richard has always lots of work. Also Thor has his trainings and preschool I need to transport him to and from every day, we couldn't go away for any more than 4 days this time, making it just a little getaway. But even a little trip is better than nothing😊👌

Abu Dhabi and the whole UAE is huge and offers lots to do and see. Especially when you're first time there! Due to our limited time in Abu Dhabi, we decided to spend this time exploring and getting to know the city life. Although I really wanted to go ride camels in the desert and visit the Zaya Nurai island, this would have taken just too much time, which is why our trip this time around was purely in the city. But that's totally OK and pretty cool too! Cause we're definitely planning on going back next year and then bring Thor with us as well. There's just so many places to go like all the islands (Abu Dhabi has over 200 of them), the desert, the Ferrari world and also to other Emirates. Plus the direct flight with airBaltic from Riga to Abu Dhabi was just the best ever - we flew over night and what could be more convenient when traveling with children😍🙌 Also, as I understand from the people at the plane with us and all our friends that have been there before, then most travel for a longer period and visit both, Abu Dhabi and Dubai during the same trip. So this is exactly what we're going to do next year as well and I can't wait!

But now, before giving you my suggestions on the places to visit in the heart of Abu Dhabi, I wanted to point out a few things for the first time travelers like we were. Because even though I always like to get to know the cities I travel before hand and read about the traditions etc, there were a few things I knew nothing about before actually being in Abu Dhabi - nobody wrote about this stuff! So I'm sharing these little remarks with you to know😉 Firstly, the weekend in Abu Dhabi (and whole UAE) is not Saturday and Sunday as we're used to but instead Friday & Saturday. Sunday is a regulard work day there but on Saturdays some places may be closed so check before visiting! Secondly, you won't believe me but NOBODY walks. It's the strangest thing for someone who's used to walking 40 000 steps daily when travelling, but there you have no option. If you want to go from one place to another, you have to take the taxi. The city is very spread out with quite long distances in between and basically no sidewalks. And thirdly, everything is located in hotels. All the restaurants, bars, cafes, clubs - everything you'd want from a city trip - is located in hotels, so you just take a taxi and drive from your hotel to another hotel😄

So once you know all these things and besides knowing these things, there are lots of places to go and see, even if you are doing just a city trip like we did this time. Although I definitely suggest getting the full experience with the desert, the islands and other Emirates, which is why we plan on going back for a longer trip next year. But with that said, these are my 5 favorite places to visit inside Abu Dhabi city for a great time out with your love:

1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

This is very obvious but you just can't visit Abu Dhabi without seeing the Grand Mosque! It is a truly amazing place with so much beauty inside and out. I suggest going there right before the sunset - you'll get the prettiest photos with the whole mosque just glowing💛

2. The Galleria

Or the Gallery mall as the locals call it is a beautiful department store with lots of designer shops and beautiful cafes. Our favorite was a Moroccan place called Almaz by Momo that had just the prettiest interior, delicious food and good shisha.

3. Glo at Rosewood

Situated just next to the Galleria, Glo rooftop bar at Rosewood hotel is a good time out when you're in the Maryah Island area. The place looks beautiful in the dark and offers a great view to the skyline.

4. Barfly by Buddha-Bar at The Ritz-Carlton

Ritz has like a little city of cafes and restaurants called Venetian Village. We went to Todd English's Olives for lunch and Barfly by Buddha-Bar for drinks and shisha. The last is very nice on weekends, you can have a great time, listen to good music and party if you wish so😉

5. Shangri-La

Just opposite from The Ritz is the Shangri-La hotel which has the most beautiful view to the mosque!   I suggest going there after you visit the mosque during sunset, cause they are so close by (still need to take a taxi though😜) and you can have a beautiful ending to the evening with an outdoor movie night, some coctails, shisha of course and watching the mosque in the dark. Just wonderful!

Have you ever been to Abu Dhabi? How did you like it?😊
